Profile Updated: September 22, 2022
Residing In: Conroe, TX USA
Spouse/Partner: Rahmawati
Occupation: Attorney
Children: Two (to the best of my knowledge and belief)

Rachel - born Jan 19, 2009
Rafael - born Jan More…19, 2009

In 2012 at age 3, Rafael announced that he aspired to be a fireman when he grew up. I asked, “Wouldn’t you prefer to be a fire TRUCK when you grow up?” His eyes widened with excitement as he said, “YEAH!!!”

In 2013 when Rachel was 4 years old I informed her that she had a middle name and, hence, her full name was “Rachel Victoria Cantú.” The following day I asked if she remembered what her full name was. She proudly informed me that her full name was “Rachel Bacteria Cantú.”
Grandchildren:

Not yet.

My twins turned 13 years old in 2022. So my grandkids are, at best, still just the faintest gleam in my kids’ eyes (I hope)!

Comments:

What have I been up to since 1970?

For the most part, these matters are best kept strictly between my confessor and me, but apart from that ...

1970-1975: college and grad school (UT Austin)
1975-1977: employed at University of Texas, Austin
1977-1980: law school, UT Austin
1980-2018: employed as an attorney for "Big Oil". About half of my career was spent living outside the USA, mostly in Indonesia but including a few years in England, Singapore and Angola.
2018-2022: mostly retired; watched a lot of Weather Channel
2022-present: retired from retirement and got back in the saddle by joining a newly established law firm. I should have done this a couple of years ago!

I've been married from time to time.

In 2009 my wife, Rahmawati, gave birth to twins, Rachel and Rafael. Ever since then I have been thanking my lucky stars that life is so wonderfully unfair because, after the way I behaved prior to 2009, there is no way I deserve the wonderful family I have now.

School Story:

Did I ever go to school?

I do recall once saying to a classmate whose mammalian characteristics I found particularly intriguing that "my DNA would love to party with your DNA."

My left ear rang and my face smarted for about 3 hours after that.

I interpreted her response as "no, thank you."

What did you do right after high school?

I hid out in college until I got tired of being destitute all the time, then I graduated and went to work.

Favorite music and performers:

Although I could rattle off lots of musicians, bands and singers who were popular when I was in high school or in college, at this point in my life I would struggle to list 3 currently performing bands, musicians or singers.

It looks like I will have to miss yet another Tascosa High School Reunion.

I’ve only managed to attend one so far – our 1980 reunion.

I missed the 1990, 2000, and 2010 reunions because I was living overseas in each of those years. I was in the USA for our 2020 reunion, but we all know what happened to that reunion.

I was planning to attend our re-scheduled reunion in September 2022. Unfortunately, my doctors recently alerted me to a potentially serious health problem I didn’t even know I had and for which I still have no symptoms. The good news is my doctors say they caught it early. However, in order to improve my chances of being around for the 2030 reunion, I will have to miss our reunion this September and stick with my therapy program.

Enjoy the reunion and feel free to drink all the booze I would have consumed if I had managed to be there.

I will see you all in 2030!

MUTANT SOUP & CAT LEMONS

The opposite sex can be notoriously difficult to understand. The problem is exacerbated when your significant other doesn’t speak your language very well or, as in the early days of our relationship, barely speaks it at all.

During our courtship, the woman who my children call “Mama” decided to impress me by cooking dinner for me. Peering at me from the kitchen doorway she asked, “Do you like mutant soup?”

I asked her to repeat herself several times but, since this only seemed to annoy her, I finally said “sure!” despite having no idea what she was talking about.

She disappeared back into the kitchen only to emerge later with some delicious “mutton soup.”

Not long after the mutant soup episode, she was rifling through my CD collection (remember those?) and asked, “Do you have Rectal?”

I explained that I’d never heard of a band called “Rectal.”

“It’s not a band. It’s the name of a song,” she replied.

“Who is it by?”

“Aerosmith.”

“I think I have all the Aerosmith recordings, but I don’t recall anything named “Rectal.”

“Oh come on! It’s one of their biggest hits!”

My mind raced through the list of Aerosmith hit tunes. Finally I asked, ”Do you mean “Rag Doll?”

“That’s what I’ve been saying! Rectal! What’s wrong with your ears?”

Now, many years later, she still keeps me and our twins in stitches. On a recent visit to Fort Worth, as we were driving around looking for a place to eat she suddenly asked, “Why don’t we eat at Cat Lemons?”

The rest of us erupted in unison, “Cat Lemons??? What kind of restaurant is that?”

Mama pointed dead ahead, exasperated that no one in her family could read the enormous billboard directly ahead of us.

We still refer to that restaurant as “Cat Lemons.”

Yes, we drove our car over 100 mph. We might have gone faster but the Mama Raccoon wouldn't allow it.

We visited Amarillo in March 2021. I had forewarned my family that the most exciting aspect of our time in Amarillo would likely be the weather.

Amarillo did not disappoint us. In the space of 5 days we saw hail and tornadoes, a clear day with sustained 45 mph winds, enjoyed a hike in Palo Duro Canyon with afternoon temperatures approaching 80 degrees followed by near blizzard conditions on our last full day in Amarillo.
