Where is the 1970 Class Gift?
Posted Thursday, June 10, 2010 02:35 PM

I heard that the new library is sitting where our gift used to be.  I think it was tables and benches.  I sorta remember what they look like.  But anyway, no one seems to know what happened to them.  A few on the committee said they looked everywhere and did not see them.  I don't know who all they asked, but they seem to have disappeared.

Maybe this would be a good research project.  "Where is the 1970 Class Gift?"

Steve -

When we were in school the mascot was General Reb.  During our senior year Rick Johnson was the one dressed as General Reb.

I think it was the fall of 1977 that they changed the mascot to the Rebel Kid.

To the Class of 1970

I will spend some time this summer looking for our gift at THS. I am friends with the principal and can go to the school and look around and see what I can find.  I will keep you posted.

I am puzzled how the question about the class gift conversation turned into something else altogether.

Mike, I hope you find an answer for us.  Connections always seem to be the best place to start.  I know I don't have any.

Sherral,

I agree with you as to how this changed directions on us.  I will work on the gift and see what I can find out. I am curious as to what has happened to the gift.

I think, I know, how the forum looked floundered, with jumbled garb, not of benches, and tables.  We can delete our own, remarks, leaving gaps, in the selections of responses.  I have deleted many, without bailing on anyone, and making them look too, out of context.     Peace.

Well my memory of the class gift was way off.  Imagine that!

I was looking in the Spring Supplement of our 1970 annual and found a picture with a caption that said:

After eight months of debate the Senior Class decided to give patio furniture as its gift to the school.  It took a crane and several hours to hoist the concrete benches and planters over the cafeteria to the patio.

I am thinking that this picture of the planters in my distant memory may have been why I thought it was tables with corresponding benches.  I wonder where the planters are.

So, where is this huge bench shaped in a T?  Not a hard thing to misplace.  But was it destroyed?  Or is it in plain site on campus and we just aren't aware of how to look for it?

Mike, anything new from your investigation?

Sherral,

I was at Tascosa this morning and located our class gift. It has been moved to a small patio that is located outside the room where we had study hall.  It appears there is not much access to the area. It is not in a T formation anymore. Because of limited space it is placed in two rows that offset each other. It is weathered and chipped in places.  I was able to take a picture looking out some windows.  I will try and send you the picture.

I am attaching the photo you sent.  Obviously, they are showing the wear and tear of the years.  I wonder how long they got to be used before they were moved to their peaceful resting place.

Thank you for locating these for us.
